Best Time to Visit Morocco: Month-by-Month Guide for 2026
iliTrip · May 12, 2026
Morocco's climate varies dramatically by region. Here's exactly when to visit Marrakech, the Sahara, Chefchaouen, and the coast — and what to avoid.
Morocco is a country of dramatic climate contrasts. The Sahara regularly exceeds 45°C in July. Marrakech gets cold in January. Timing your visit correctly can be the difference between the trip of your life and an endurance test.
The Short Answer
Best months overall: March–May and September–November. Spring and early autumn give you mild temperatures across every region, manageable crowds, and accommodation 20–30% cheaper than peak.
Month-by-Month
January–February: Cold and quiet. Marrakech 18–20°C days, 5–8°C nights. Riad prices drop 30–40%. The Sahara has freezing nights but extraordinary light and empty dunes.
March–May: Morocco's golden window. 22–28°C everywhere. The countryside is green. Sahara is perfect day and night. Book riads 4–6 weeks ahead.
July–August: Marrakech averages 38°C daily, peaks above 42°C. The Sahara is for the heat-adapted only. Peak tourist season despite being peak heat. The mountain regions (Rif, High Atlas) are the intelligent alternative at 10–15°C cooler.
September–November: September is arguably the single best month. Temperatures drop from 38°C to 28°C, summer crowds evaporate, and the light becomes the famous amber quality that photographers travel from around the world to capture.
Regional Differences
- Chefchaouen: Cooler year-round due to Rif Mountain altitude. Comfortable even in July–August.
- Essaouira: Atlantic winds make it significantly cooler than Marrakech. Best May–October.
- Fes: Hotter summers. Spring and autumn far more comfortable for medina exploration.
