Portugal in 10 Days: The Perfect Lisbon, Porto & Algarve Itinerary

iliTrip · April 20, 2026

Ten days is just right for Portugal's golden trio — from the original pastel de nata bakery to Benagil cave, with none of the typical tourist mistakes.

Portugal punches above its weight. The food is extraordinary, the wine is cheap and excellent, and it remains significantly less expensive than France, Italy, or Spain.

Days 1–3: Lisbon

Alfama: Castelo de São Jorge at 9am for the view. Evening fado in a small restaurant on Rua do São João da Praça. Belém: Jerónimos Monastery is the best single building in Portugal. Queue at Pastéis de Belém for the original custard tarts — eaten hot, at the marble counter, with cinnamon. LX Factory Sunday market for design, vintage, and the best bookshop in Lisbon.

Days 4–6: Porto

The Ribeira waterfront is UNESCO World Heritage. Cross the Dom Luís bridge at sunset. Port wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia — Graham's, Sandeman, Taylor's. Livraria Lello: buy the timed entry ticket online (€8). The francesinha sandwich at Café Santiago is the essential local experience.

Day 7: Douro Valley

Drive the N222, one of the most scenic roads in Europe. Stop at Quinta do Crasto for tastings. Or take the train from Porto — one of Europe's great scenic rail journeys.

Days 8–10: Algarve

Stay in Lagos. Ponta da Piedade sea stacks by kayak. Benagil Cave at 8am before tour boats. Praia da Marinha for the most dramatic cliff-backed beach. May and September are significantly quieter and 30–40% cheaper than summer.
